SCHOOL YEAR 2011/2012 During this year we have been working mainly in one idea, How to go from "Local to Global". We have been learning about AIDS, Teen-depresion, Addiction and Drugs. We have been sending messages to our classmates and network's friends using posters, emails and network posters to them. We realized that we have to be prepared non only for our lives but for all those around us (friends, younger siblings, classmates) to give them the right information about those different topics that could have an important influence in their lives. Students in this group this year were: Stefano Cantoni (10) Victoria De Simon Fernandez Sastron (10) Artem Dzhabrailov (10) Josi Garcia Valles (12) Weijun Hu (09) Shoya Kato (11) Max-Rochus Mei (10) George Otaola .P (12) Arthur Pelinson Nordi (09) Alejandro Roemer (11) Diana Sargsyan (10) Elizaveta Sienko (10) Nikol Ustinova (09) I thanks them for all their hard work and time together! GERMAN RUDAKOV. IB Student. TASIS

Compared to my participation in a play production, my service learning "career" is unimpressive. I have not recieved thunderous appalauses or fame of any kind, and yet I still consider my time in Ms. Brown's group to be one of the most globally important activities I have ever done. The group, "Global Health", focused on promoting good health and fighting various diseases all over the world, but especially in less - developed countries that do not have the ability to provide adequate health care for their people. We raised public awareness against diseases that could be easily prevented - such as AIDS, microbial diarrhea and most of STDs - and then posted this information online so that it is easily availible to people. We discussed what can be done to increase the living conditions in the poorest regions of the world. We urged fellow students to take action and help the people in developing countries to recieve proper healthcare, either by going to South Africa on one of the school humanitary aid summer trips - in particular those provided by other service learning groups, like "Habitat for Humanity" -or by donating money to one of the NGOs that provide help for the sick and malnourished people in the Third World. We also collected money for NGOs in other ways: in total, we raised over 3500 CHF with "no dress code ticket" and bake sales. Most of the projects that we have done were not individual, but a product of the group's collaboration; we tried to act together as much as possible to achieve the best results. There was no definite leader in the group, aside from Ms. brown, but I usually contacted different members and organised their work and meetings.--

Preventing the spread of disease...

Better than a Flu Shot!

Miss Beatrice,

The church organist, was in her eighties
and had never been married. She was admired for her
sweetness and kindness to all.
One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint
sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea...
As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young
minister noticed a cut glass bowl sitting on top of it.
The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all
things, a condom! When she returned
with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor
tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its
strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.
"Miss Beatrice," he said, "I wonder if you would tell me about this?"
pointing to the bowl.
"Oh, yes," she replied, "Isn't it wonderful?
I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found
this little package on the ground.
The directions said: to place it on the organ,
keep it wet, and that it would prevent the spread of disease.
Do you know I haven't had the flu all winter?"

Different ways to cure depression.

In schools many kids face the problem that we call teenage depression.Teenage depression is really dangerous because it can lead to suicide. To stop this instead of teaching the kids that this is something bad we must empathize with them to understand their condition better.

Positive Thinking

Always think positively, you will stay connected to the creative power, and you will stay focused. When you think negatively you bring anger, confusion, anxiety, depression and frustration. If you think that you can win a game, you will have more courage and energy, so you will have more chances of winning. Always think of a half full glass, not half empty.
Remember that you are smarter then you think, that what you do today may not seem significant, but always remember that day by day it will make you life.

How to diagnose teen depression

- Changes in sleeping habits
- Fatigue
- Appetite changes
- Feeling upset for long times.
- Criminal and irresponsible behaviors.
- Loss of interest and pleasures.
- Temptation of suicide.

Teenage Depression

Over 600000 people face teenage depression each year.

Teenage depression can be treated!

Do not be afraid to talk to people and ask for help!

Girls' Psychological Development

During development over the years, all girls are facing many difficulties in their life. They try to be perfect and it leads to many different problems like depression. They are concidering too serious to frivolity things; such as, how they look like, what others think about them, who likes them etc. Because of this they need support and some understanding.

effects of teen depression

The negative effects of teenage depression go far beyond a melancholy mood. Many rebellious and unhealthy behaviors or attitudes in teenagers are actually indications of depression. The following are some the ways in which teens "act out" or "act in" in an attempt to cope with their emotional pain.

-Problems at school
-Running away
-Drug and Alcohol abuse
-Low self-esteem
-Internet addiction
-Reckless behavior
-Violence

Teen depression is also associated with a number of other mental health problems, including eating disorders and self injury.

Teenage Depression

Unlike popular belief, depression is a chemical disorder in our bodies, not a mental sickness. Teenagers may feel insecure to talk, and further treat depression due to their little knowledge in the subject. Some may see it as a difficult subject to talk about, when it should not be. Truth is, that it should be treated as any other medical emergency, such as braking an arm or any other health threatening situation. Some may choose to go through the depression, other may choose to take their own lives. 600,000 teens will try to commit suicide each year. If you can help people which are depressed, you may save a life.

Nov. 14th debate.

The price
We choose what we want to learn. Just, as we choose the subjects at the beginning of each year. Prohibition leads to taboo. The more something is prohibited, the more people would be curious about it. If you think the Internet filter works, you are wrong. Students are smarter than you think or at least when they want to. TASIS education is incomplete; we can get a diploma for the things you learn is school, but at the end students doesn’t fully understand how their bodies works.

Students' handbook
If it is not written in the handbook, then it is permitted. In page 25, we see how pornography & coed visits are prohibited. But nowhere does it say that public display of affection can’t occur outside of dorms or outside of school. So, it is allowed or not?

Drug Discussion

  • Many question if this [drug addiction] is really something that affects people at all levels, what do you think? Is it really a global issue?

During our presentation, many different opinions were said about this. It was discussed that it was, in fact, a global issue since it affects a wide range of people involved in it, and even some not so involved indirectly. Drug addicts clearly destroy their lives slowly, they put aside activities that they really enjoy to put time on either looking for someone to buy drugs from, or time to consume.

Besides this, the family of any drug addict would, in most cases feel concerned about one family member involved into this type of dependence. The same thing happens with friends, in a long term pushing them aside.

  • Who do you think has th most responsibility for drug trading and the consequences that such practices bring to society: producers or demanding consumers?

Different perspectives also came out of this question during the discussion.

Some people mentioned that the blame is all on the producers, since they are the ones who make possible any kind of addiction to these substances. They are the ones who create the source of the problem, so they are responsible for it, some argued.

On the other hand, others said that some of the blame should be placed on demanding consumers. At times, producers are not malicious people who want to cause problems, but people who is willing to do anything to put some food on the dining table.

  • Many regulations already exist to control drug trade, do you think that this is enough to adress the problem? In your opinion, what else could be done?

Yes it is true that there are many regulations against drug consumption, trafficking, dealing, etc. However, the real problem exist in enforcing these laws and regulations that already exist; furthermore, educating people about drugs and their side effects given the fact that missinformation about drugs' addictive properties is a very common factor among prospective drug consumers.

Not Feast, but Famine

Despite the overproduction and overconsumption of food in most of the world, many developing countries, especially those in Sub-Saharan Africa, cannot produce enough food to feed their total population. Is this starvation and famine a crisis? Who is responsible to help and in what ways?

We made a presentation about the points above. We presented it for the students who were interested in this topic, and it was really successful. We had the power point presentation, answered a lot of questions, showed the video about starvation in Ethiopia and one of our students, whose name is German made the amazing speech about the same topics.
